Robotics / Hardware Engineer @ Lumen Labs in San Francisco, CA

Howdy y’all,

We’re Lumen Labs, a funded pre-seed physical AI startup in San Francisco. Nearly every major robotics effort today teaches machines.

by showing them thousands of hours of human teleoperation. We think that paradigm has a ceiling, and that the path to robots that genuinely adapt runs through a different kind of learning. We’re primarily focused on nature-inspired AI architectures for unstructured environments (construction sites, mining, oil pipelines, battlefield).

We’re a team of two and hiring someone to own the hardware and infrastructure that keeps our research platforms running. This means maintaining and extending ROS2 (Humble) nodes across onboard and offboard compute, integrating and calibrating sensors, owning the safety pipeline during autonomous runs, and keeping the data logging pipeline clean and reliable.

The other half of the job is sim2real. You won’t need to set up the sims yourself, but you’ll be the one getting trained policies onto real hardware and figuring out where the robot and environment differ from the sim. Here’s where we’re at today, zero-shot sim2real transfer, policy that can run at 100Hz on an ESP32, under a day to train:

lumen-robot-12s-360p

You’ll thrive here if you’ve built and run real robots of more than one kind, and have done off-the-beaten-path side projects along the way.

In-person in San Francisco. Competitive salary + equity, health insurance, and visa/relocation support for the right candidate.

Full job description

Send us a note at hi@lumenresearch.co or reply to this post telling us a bit about you, projects you’ve worked on, and why you’d want to work at Lumen. If you can link us to a project where you got a trained policy running on real hardware, your application will move to the top of our pile. I’ll be at ROSCON 2026 and at Pittsburgh Robotics and AI Discovery Day. Feel free to message if you want to chat in person at either one.

Founding Robotics Engineer @ Merista.ai in Barcelona, Spain

Merista builds the physical AI workforce for food production. This is our founding team robotics hire, reporting to the CTO, owning the robot’s mind, and everything between intent and motion. Full-time and on-site in Barcelona.

The challenge

Food changes shape, sticks to tools, and behaves differently as containers empty. A successful movement can still produce an incorrect portion. A policy that works in a demonstration may struggle after hours of operation.

That means the hard problems are the whole job:

We expect robot learning to play an important role. You’ll help determine where it earns its place, how to evaluate it, and how it should work with sensing, control, and mechanical design.

What you’d own

You’ll lead technical choices across manipulation, learning, and control, working with perception and mechatronics engineers to define the interfaces. You’ll own the path from a policy’s output to reliable motion on the robot, including real-time execution, failure detection, and recovery. Your responsibility continues into deployment, where we find out which assumptions survive.

What you bring

You don’t need prior food-industry experience. Show us something you built, what broke, and how you improved it.

About us

Most meals in the developed world pass through a food factory. The hardest and most repetitive manipulation tasks on the line still defeat machines, like portioning and assembling real food in small batches that frequently change. So people do them by hand in cold and wet rooms. Factories cannot keep those rooms staffed.

Merista builds the physical AI workforce for food production: operated robots that take over these tasks. One robot rolls onto a factory floor without rebuilding the line. We deploy it and run it, and the factory pays for the work it does.

We’ve already built and operated a multi-site robotic fleet for restaurants, dealt with production failures, field operations, remote recovery, hardware iteration, deployments and customers. Now we’re starting again with a much more ambitious technical thesis.

Our long-term vision is the self-driving food factory. The work today is one task at a time.

Why join at this stage

The core technical choices are still open. Your work will shape the data we collect, how we measure progress, and what we deploy.

Our longer-term thesis is that useful factory deployments can create a compounding learning advantage: observe real failures, capture the right data, improve the system, and carry those improvements into the next deployment. Building that loop is part of this role.

As the team grows, you can deepen your technical ownership or move toward team leadership. We value both paths.

Expect hardware delays, repeated experiments, and production debugging alongside new development. Part of the job is standing on a factory floor at 6am, watching a robot fail, and working with the team to understand what needs to change. We always find ways to adapt, improvise, and overcome. If you enjoy owning the whole path from an idea to a working machine, there is a great deal here to build.

Robotics Software Engineer - Austin, TX - Valstad Shipworks

Hey all,

Background on us: we’re a venture-backed startup based in Austin, Texas. We’re reinventing the way America builds ships, centered around high-mix robotics.

Our current platform is designed to take a 3D model of part of a ship, automatically generate an assembly sequence, and assemble and weld it using industrial robots and a collection of sensors.

The stuff we’re building is big - currently up to 10x40’ - and will go into everything from commercial ships to autonomous vessels.

The challenge we’re solving: most of the parts are composed of similar primitives, but it’s rare that any two are exactly alike.

To solve this, we’ve built our software stack from the ground up in rust - SIMD-accelerated motion planning, elastokinematic calibration, physics-based simulation - our core robotics libraries have very few external dependencies.

The goal is rapid generation speed (currently <30s) on commodity hardware, high precision, and full control at the actuator level.

Example of our simulator:

And the same software running on real robots in Austin:

Our philosophy is: closed-form first for accuracy & repeatability, and then layer reinforcement learning on top where it makes sense.

The job description is available on our website here:

If this is something you find interesting, don’t hesitate to apply even if you don’t meet the exact criteria. Just be obsessed with robots =D

Job market worries as a robotics student — how did you get your start?

Hello everyone,

I’m still relatively new here and in this field, but I’m really excited about robotics. I’m currently a sophomore Computer Engineering student, and I’m working really hard. I’m trying to do volunteer internships and contribute to open-source projects.

Setting aside who I am, I’m really worried about finding a job in this field in the future.

I see many graduates around me who remain unemployed for a long time, and even my friends who have developed their skills in other fields (like web, mobile, etc.) are struggling to find jobs, despite more employment opportunities in those areas. Additionally, many people on platforms like LinkedIn mention how difficult it is to find jobs in the IT field, and this really worries me. The niche nature of the robotics field only fuels this concern.

So I wanted to ask the community directly:

  1. How difficult has it actually been for people breaking into robotics recently, compared to other software fields?
  2. For someone still early on, trying to land a first real role in this field what would you focus on? Is open-source contribution the right lever, or are there other paths that matter more for actually getting hired?

I’m really curious to hear your thoughts and experiences on this topic.

Exstrike Real TIme Vision & Safety infrastructure for Autonomous Systems & Tactical Robotics

Hey guys,

I’m building Exstrike. It’s a real-time safety filters (using Control Barrier Functions + computer vision) designed to prevent physical crashes when autonomous robots or AI navigation models mess up.

The goal is to build a drop in SDK for robotics, drones, and tactical ground vehicles (dual use/defense) that forces the machine to stop before hitting anything, even if the primary AI panics or loses GPS

The problem in physical AI right now is massive: navigation models fail, sensors blind out, and multi-thousand dollar hardware gets destroyed in a split second. Most systems rely on soft software limits that fail under pressure. Exstrike solves this at the lowest level by decoupling perception safety math, and hardware override into a dedicated 3-model architecture

Hercule (LLM to Spatial Perception Engine):

Hercule bridges high-level AI models and Vision-LLMs (Claude, Gemini, GPT-4o) with real-world physical precision and hallucinate spatial boundaries. Hercule ingests raw camera feeds at high frame rates to perform continuous spatial mapping, velocity estimation, and obstalce LLM agents precise physical grounding in real time without cloud latency or heavy compute overhead.

Soteria (Deterministic Control Barrier Engine):

Soteria is the mathematical brain that enforces physical safety boundaries. it takes the spatial vectors from Hercule and continuoulsy solves real-time Quadratic Programs (QP) using Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). Rather than guessing what to do, Soteria calculates the exact physical envelope of the vehicle. As long as the primary navigation AI stays set, Soteria remains passive; the moment a trajectory breaches the safe set, Soteria dynamically modifies the control commands.

Armageddon (Hard Stop & Failsafe Execution Unit):

Armageddon is the zero-latency emergency hardware override. Sitting directly above the motor controlllers and actuators, it operates as a fail-closed circuit breaker. If Hercule loses visual tracking or Soteria calculates an unavoidable impact trajectory within a critical time to collision threshold, Armageddon executes a total override cutting drive signals or engaging maximum regenerative braking instantly. It completly bypasses the main AI and flight controller, ensuring zero delay and zero guesswork when a crash is imminent.

This is going to be huge because every single autonomous unit deployed in high-risk, real-world environments needs a bulletproof safety fallback. We are building the industry standard for physical crash prevention from the ground up.

I’ve arleady validated the core logic and real-time obstacle tracking on a physical test bench.

Now, I need a technical co-founder to help scale this raw prototype into a production grade, ultra low latency c++/ros 2 framework

Who i’m looking for

Deep hands on skills in c++, ros 2, or computer vision (OpenCV,CUDA).

low-level systems builders who care about hard real-time execution and raw perfomance.

An ambitious technical partner / co founder to join the initial build phase

We’re building the foundational layer fore the next decade of physical AI. If you can write low latency c++ and want to build high-stakes defense systems, DM me. Let’s make history.

Hiring or looking for jobs in Robotics Software Engineering?

Hi all,

Robotics software engineering has an oddly scattered job market. Openings end up on a single university page, a company careers site, or a mailing list, and the people who’d be the right fit often never see them. There’s no obvious place to look if you specifically care about the software side of robotics: testing, verification, architecture, middleware, tooling, and so on.

So the RoSE community (the Robot Software Engineering workshop, most recently at ICRA) has put together a small jobs board to help with exactly that.

If you’re hiring, a company looking for robotics software engineers, or a research group with open PhD, postdoc, or engineer positions, you can submit an opening through a short form. Every submission is reviewed by the organisers before it goes live, and it stays on the board until its deadline passes. It’s free and takes a couple of minutes.

If you’re looking, the board is worth a browse. It’s curated for this corner of the field, so the signal-to-noise is high, and it’ll grow as more positions come in.

It’s a community effort and entirely non-commercial. Feedback on what would make it more useful is very welcome, and please pass it along to anyone recruiting or job-hunting in this space.

Thanks!

Autonomous Systems Startup - Lead Robotics Software Engineer, Clearwater, FL, ~$150K

We’re a small, well-funded stealth startup building autonomous USV and UUV platforms. Early stage, real hardware, real deployments.

We’re looking for someone to own the software stack. Architecture decisions, sensor integration, autonomy frameworks, operator interfaces. You’ll be the person who decides how things are built. You’ll work in tandem with our hardware lead, you’ll need to be Florida based or able to relocate.

What we need:

Ideally you’ve shipped production-grade autonomous systems. You’re comfortable in C++ or Python, you know ROS 2 well enough to have opinions about it, and ideally you’ve dealt with the gap between a system that works in Gazebo and one that works in the field.

Specific experience that matters:

Robotics integrator — autonomous pallet jack bring-up (1–2 week contract, on-site Los Angeles)

What this is: We’re retrofitting a standard 24V electric walkie pallet truck into an autonomous

unit. The autonomy software is already written and runs in simulation — your job is the hardware

bring-up: drive-by-wire, sensors, and getting it driving itself in a cordoned area. This is

integration and fabrication, not writing an autonomy stack from scratch.

Location: On-site, Los Angeles (90021). Full-time for the contract.

Duration: 1–2 weeks, start ASAP this week. Extension likely — this is unit one of a fleet.

You will, in order:

1. Bring up an NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano: Ubuntu, ROS 2 Humble, Nav2, slam_toolbox.

2. Drive-by-wire: interface a Teensy to the walkie’s motor controller (throttle injection or

CANopen), command traction and lift, read a wheel encoder.

3. Fabricate and mount a steering actuator on the tiller column (the main mechanical task).

4. Wire a manual e-stop that hard-cuts traction power, independent of software.

5. Tele-op it, then map a cordoned area and bring up Nav2 goal-to-goal with obstacle stop.

6. Integrate our control code (provided) so the unit takes tasks over VDA5050.

Must have:

- ROS 2 + Nav2 (mapping, localization, planning).

- Hands-on drive-by-wire on real vehicles or AMRs — motor controllers, CAN, throttle/steer actuation.

- Mechanical fabrication: brackets, actuator mounts, 24V wiring, fusing.

- Safety-first instinct around powered industrial equipment.

Nice to have: forklift / AGV / AMR experience, VDA5050 familiarity, ANSI B56.5 awareness.

We provide the vehicle, all parts, the autonomy software, the build spec, and the workspace.

You bring skills and tools.

Deliverable: the unit drives itself point-to-point in a cordoned, people-free area and takes a goal

from our system. (Pallet picking and shared-floor safety are a later, separate phase.)

To apply, reply with: (1) the closest thing you’ve built to a self-driving vehicle or AMR — one

paragraph, what was specifically yours; (2) your availability this week; (3) your rate.
